When to Bring in IT Consulting Before You Build Anything
The cheapest mistake is the one caught early
A wrong technical decision made in the first week of a project is inexpensive to fix. The same mistake discovered a year and thousands of users later can mean rebuilding core parts of a system from scratch. Good consulting is not about slowing a project down, it is about spending a little time upfront to avoid spending a lot of time and money later.
Where it matters most
- Before choosing a platform or vendor, when the wrong choice locks you into years of limitations
- Before scaling, when a system that worked fine for 100 users needs to work for 10,000
- Before a major integration, when connecting two systems incorrectly can quietly corrupt data on both sides
- When a project is already struggling, and an outside, technically grounded view can identify what is actually going wrong
What good consulting looks like
Useful IT consulting is specific and grounded in your actual business, not a generic slide deck of best practices. It should leave you with clear, practical recommendations you can act on, not just a longer list of things to worry about.
The real question to ask
The question is rarely "can we afford to bring in outside expertise." It is "can we afford the cost of the mistake outside expertise would have caught."
